Description
Elder brother of MONGOLIA 3, MONGOLIA 5 yarn is a delicate blend of yak down and fleece of merino sheep. The yak down originates exclusively from the "Khangai Mountains Breeders Cooperative", an eco-responsible and fair trade local organisation set up by Fonty in Mongolia with the technical support of AVSF (Agronomists and Veterinarians Without Borders). The yaks are combed in the spring by Mongolian herders, and after sorting, a little less than 100g of down per animal and per year are harvested and transformed into yarn by Fonty.
Merino wool, unbleached white, has the particularity of fixing the pigments much better than yak down (grey, brown or dark brown), which remains almost unscathed. The result is a mottled yarn with incredible colors and reflections. This 5-ply yarn, in addition to its exceptional colors and feel, is particularly warm and soft; it is knitted with #6 needles. It is recommended to wash MONGOLIA 5 by hand, if possible with organic natural soap, without spinning, and to dry it flat. Like all yak fibres, it has the particularity of softening with successive washes.
